HOUSE SPRINGS, MO (KMOX) – Friday is a big day at Chris Sanna’s House Springs home. The mother and step-father of the Army Veteran who was left paralyzed in a robbery and shooting after a Cardinals game in September, are checking the progress volunteers have made in making it accessible for him.
The effort is being led by the Gary Sinise Foundation. Spokesman Chris Kuban tells KMOX, “We have really remodeled this entire house so it’s handicapped accessible. So when Chris is ready and able to leave the hospital, he’ll be able to come to a house where he’ll be able to be independent as much as possible.”
Sanna was hoping to be stop by Friday, but he tells KMOX’s Charlie Brennan doctors tell him he won’t be able to go home until January 15. Speaking from a hospital bed, Sanna says he is spending a lot of time in rehab, “Trying to teach me how to live life with paralysis. How to be a paraplegic, all those kind of things. It’s a lot of getting to know your body all over again.”
About 60 volunteers were at the home in House Springs on Friday, including several from the Home Depot Foundation. “They’re going to install the cabinets in the kitchen,” Kuban says, “they’re installing the garage cabinets by Gladiator Cabinets. They’re actually installing several doors to the house including doggy doors for Chris’ dog.”
Kuban says the rehab should be completed early next year, “The inspection process is close to completion. They’re able to put up all of the drywall and start painting. I think in the next two weeks the entire house is really going to come together.”
In addition to Home Depot, Kuban says other key supporters include Benjamin Moore, GE, and the firefighters’ and plumbers’ unions.
Chris says his medical bills are “ridiculous”. You can help by going to his gofundme page, by clicking here.
