ST. LOUIS (KMOX)(UPDATED 5 p.m.) The 159th homicide victim in the city of St. Louis has been identified.

St. Louis police say the body found this morning under construction materials in the Baden neighborhood is that of missing army veteran, Robert Polk.

An X-ray revealed the victim suffered a gunshot wound. An autopsy will be performed Friday.

As KMOX reported earlier this week, Polk’s family last saw the 22-year-old on Oct. 3 when he reportedly left to possibly buy a car posted on Craigslist.

Police say Polk was found dead by construction workers who were at the property two days ago and had been smelling a strong odor they assumed was a dead animal.

Our previous reporting is as follows:

It appears the body found this morning in far northeast St. Louis had been there a while.

St. Louis police say the man’s body found under some drywall behind a home in the 8000 block of Frederick was in a state of decomposition.

Demolition crew workers made the discovery about 7:40 a.m. Thursday in the Baden neighborhood.

The victim has not been identified, and the cause of death was not immediately known.

Homicide detectives are investigating pending an autopsy.

If the man was the murdered, he would be St. Louis’ 159th murder victim of the year, matching last year’s total.
